- Bring water to a slow boil. Pour in sugar and stir slowly until it dissolves to make simple syrup.

- Set heat to low simmer. Add berries, lemon zest and juice. Drop in cinnamon stick. Stir to combine.
- Lightly boil about 20 minutes covered. Use the back of a wooden spoon to mash half the fruit. Remove from heat and allow to cool with cinnamon stick in pot. Remove stick and serve warm. Strain syrup from fruit compote and use separately or together.
