Summer in the Carolinas is full of sunshine, family time, and outdoor fun. For many parents and caregivers, it can also bring the challenge of stretching the food budget further and keeping children fed while school is out. At Carolina Cuisine Network, we’re happy to help families stay connected to local food resources, community programs, and the rich culinary traditions of the Carolina states. Alongside recipes and Carolina-rooted stories, we also share practical tools that support families where it matters most, right at the kitchen table.
One of the most important supports available during the summer months is access to free meals to scholl-aged children. These programs help ensure that every child- no matter their family’s budget- can enjoy healthy, delicious meals all summer long.

5 Trusted Resources That Help Carolina Families Find Free Meals for School Children
- (SFSP) Summer Food Service Program: The SFSP is a nationwide program that funds free meals for children 18 and under. Local schools, churches, libraries, and community centers host meal sites where kids can enjoy nutritious lunches at no cost. Many sites offer breakfast also. Show up to the site at designated days and times with the child(ren), no registration or ID is required. Text “FOOD” or “COMIDA” to 304-304
- No Child Hungry Meal Finder: No Kid Hungry provides as easy-to-use online map and text service that helps families locate the closest free meal sites. Simply enter your ZIP code to see nearby locations, serving times, and meal types. The information is updated frequently throughout the summer. Call 1-866-3-HUNGRY for the national hotline and more information.
- Local School District Summer Meal Programs: Even when school is out, many Carolina school districts continue serving meals. Some offer grab and go bags, while others host open cafeterias. District websites typically post weekly schedules, menus, and pickup instructions. Continue to check your school district’s website for summer meal information.
- Boys & Girls Club of the Carolinas: Many Boys & Girls Club locations across the Carolinas participate in summer nutrition programs. Children enrolled in summer camps or drop-in programs often receive free lunches and snacks as part of their daily activities. Check the websites for the Boys & Girls Club of Henderson County at 1304 Ashe St. Hendersonville, NC 28792, the location at 405 W Raleigh Blvd. Rocky Mount, or the Oxford, NC location on West Street. Wilmington, Morehead City, and more locations are offering programs.
- Food Banks and Mobile Pantry Programs: Food banks across the Carolinas, including regional partners of Feeding America– offer mobile pantry stops, family food boxes, and kid-friendly meal kits during summer months. These programs are especially helpful in rural areas where transportation may be limited, or caregiver mobility is an issue. Many locations also share fresh produce from local farms, strengthening the Carolina farm-to-table connection.
