There are over 100 delicious varieties of apples grown and available in America from farm stands, farmers markets, supermarkets, and more, offering many opportunities to pick the perfect one for a delicious side dish. Granny Smith apples are wonderfully large, crisp, and just the right amount of tart, making them ideal for cooking and inspiring tasty and easy recipes. This delightful dish comes together quickly with just four budget-friendly ingredients that blend to create a burst of grand flavor.

FRIED APPLES, serves 2

INGREDIENTS:

  • 1 large Granny Smith apple, washed, peeled, and cored. These are green and tart apples hearty for cooking
  • 2 teaspoons salted butter or margarine
  • 2 teaspoons brown sugar (optional)
  • 1/8 teaspoon (a good sprinkle) of ground cinnamon or apple pie spice

METHOD:

  • In a small frying pan or cast-iron pan, add butter on low heat.
  • Cut thin slices of apples and add to the pan. Stir and use medium low heat, do not allow butter to turn more than golden brown.
  • Add cinnamon and brown sugar, if using. Drizzle up to 2 teaspoons of water if adding sugar. This helps make syrup. Stir and cover.
  • Cook 8 to 10 minutes covered until fruit is tender, stirring occasionally to coat all the apples with cinnamon butter sauce. Serve apples warm with buttery sauce as a side dish anytime of year. Try these with waffles or pancakes in the morning too.
